Naya Sukezaemon was born about 1600. A native of Sakai (Osaka Prefecture), Japan.
He made huge profits by trading in the Ryukyus (Loochoo Islands), Luzon and other South Seas areas. He lived in such a luxurious fashion that he invited the displeasure of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and his fortune declined subsequently. In 1607, he left Japan for good for Cambodia, after having donated his mansion to the Daianji Temple for the repose of his soul.
