(Preface In this book I propose to analyze the decline and...)
Preface In this book I propose to analyze the decline and to suggest a case for the revival of democratic theory. Because democratic theory is a part of political theory it is important initially to understand the reasons for the bankruptcy of political theory in the Western World. Such understanding may suggest not only what must be done to revive political theory in general but also democratic theory in particular. It is my thesis that the bankruptcy of political theory is attributable to its failure to perform five significant roles. First, political theory has ceased to unify and undergird the discipline of political science. Second, it is no longer ably employed to clarify our political values. Third, it has ceased helpfully to illuminate empirical political reality. Fourth, it is not adequately used to facilitate prudent guidance in political life. A nd, finally, political theory has failed to assist us in doing more significant normative, empirical, and prudential research. The arguments in support of this thesis will be developed in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2I attempt to answer the question, Why have we in the modern world lost sight of the five major roles to be performed by political theory, particularly democratic theory? Four major reasons, I will argue, account for this loss of vision. First, we have been so frightened by totalitarian theory that we are leery of employing any kind of theory as a guide to action. Second, we have been intimidated by the belief that only an emphasis on precision of meaning and empirical verification, as illustrated by the hard sciences, will lead to a truer and more fruitful political science. Written by prominent scholars from a wide range of disciplines, this diverse collection of essays discusses the contemporary relevance of the prophetic mode and challenges in the areas of religion, politics, and society. The contributors critically investigate the creative interaction between the religious and secular domains and explain how the prophetic mode can provide solutions to pressing problems such as war, oppression, poverty, hunger, and discrimination. The essays explore possibilities of achieving an integration of prophetic ethics, social scientific understanding, and democratic and constitutional statecraft and they describe how the prophetic mode currently manifests itself in political philosophy, history, religion, and literature.

(In this fourth edition Neal Riemer and Douglas W. Simon a...)
In this fourth edition Neal Riemer and Douglas W. Simon again seek to introduce students to the challenging discipline of political science by highliting six cardinal features. The editors strongly believe that their unique and comprehensive approach, employing those six features, can best equip students of political science to stay abreast of the ever-changing, and ever-challenging, world of politics. First and most important Riemer and Simon affirm the importance of addressing the three main concerns of political science: political and philosophy and ethics, empirical/behavioral political science, and public policy. Secon, the authors reaffirm their normative preference for politics as a civilizing enterprise, one that enables people in the political community live better, to grow robustly in mind and spirit, and to find creative fulfillment. The fourth cardinal feature requires to recognize realistically the ever-chaning nature of politics and the tasks of assessing and responding to changing values. The sixth cardinal feature of The New World of Politics is understanding the importance of keeping the future in mind―not only the immediate future, but the long-range future. This book seeks to introduce students to political science as a discipline intimately involved with ethics, emprical social scientific inquiry, and public policy. Neal Riemer and Douglas W. Simon are endeavoring to help students respond to those future problems with understanding and wisdom. A Collegiate Press book

This book evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of four political models in relation to the future of democracy. the book explores the realism of Machiavellian politics, the naive idealism of Utopian politics, and the complacent realistic/idealistic compormises of Liberal Democratic politics, arguing that only the prophetic model can incorporate the strength and avoid the weakness of the other three.

(Neal Riemer examines the political theory of one of the c...)
Neal Riemer examines the political theory of one of the chief architects of that venerable document. The author elaborates on the philosophical and political context of the first fifty years of the new nation, showing how complex and unprecedented its problems were. How would it be possible to establish and maintain a free and republican government in a nation of such large size and with such divergent interests among its states? As Riemer concludes, we must attribute part of the continuing success of the American Constitution to Madison's prophetic political vision.

(So often, political science is introduced to students as ...)
So often, political science is introduced to students as a segmented field. The Challenge of Politics instead enables students to see how the subfields converge around a set of crucial questions: can we, as citizens and students articulate and defend a view of the good political life and its guiding political values? Can we develop a science of politics to help us understand significant political phenomenauthe empirical realities of politics? Can we bring a high level of political prudence or wisdom to bear on judgments about politics and public issues? Can citizens and students creatively address the future of politics?Riemer, Simon, and Romance aim to harmonize the valuable lessons of classic and contemporary theory, as well as to reconcile politics to scientific and empirical study. The book gives students an avenue to explore the impact of philosophy and ideology, to recognize major forms of government, to evaluate empirical findings, and to understand how policy issues directly affect peopleAes lives. Throughout, the authors look at political dynamics of American, comparative, and international affairs. While continuing to pursue its distinctive normative approach and showing politics to be a potentially humanizing enterprise, this new edition of Challenge has been revised and updated for major world events like the global financial crisis, recent elections in the U.S. and elsewhere, important policy decisions like the recent Supreme Court ruling in the U.S. on healthcare, and the aftermath of the Arab Spring. Based on reviewer feedback, it has also been substantially streamlined throughout.

( Neal Riemer's new book explores a vital, but surprising...)
Neal Riemer's new book explores a vital, but surprisingly neglected theme. Riemer first examines two great historical breakthroughs: to religious liberty, and to the American federal republic. He then contrasts these genuine breakthroughs to two spurious ones: Calhoun's theory of the concurrent majority and Marx's theory of universal human emancipation. Riemer also examines a contemporary breakthrough to European Union to underscore the sense of continuing to deal with major problems that the conventional wisdom has deemed incapable of solution. Finally, he addresses a future breakthrough to protect against genocide via a global human rights regime employing policies of prudent prevention, effective implementation, and just humanitarian intercession. This book seeks to move political science beyond Cold War mentality and practice, a narrow-minded political realism, and post-modernism's nihilism toward a more prophetic politics. Riemer's latest book will be of crucial importance to scholars and students in all areas of political science, political philosophy, human rights, and international relations.
