He played in the Football League First Division for Huddersfield Town, Birmingham and Chelsea. On leaving Birmingham Barkas followed Knighton to Chelsea, returning to the Midlands on the outbreak of the Second World War. He died in Little Bromwich, Birmingham, at the age of 60. with Huddersfield Town.
