Background

Dyer, Nehemiah Mayo was born on February 19, 1839 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Henry and Sally (Mayo) Dyer.

Education

Educational public schools. Followed the sea, 1854-1859. Mercantile employment, 1859-1861.

Unmarried. Enlisted 13th Massachusetts Vols., 1861. Transferred to volunteer navy as acting master’s mate, April 4, 1862. Promoted for gallant services to acting ensign, May 18, 1863.

Advanced through grades to captain, July 13, 1897. Rear admiral, and retired, February 19, 1901.
