Mendelson began his career as a postdoctoral fellow of the microbial genetics research unit at Medical Research Council of Hammersmith Hospital in 1965. Two years later he took the position of an assistant professor at the University of Maryland. Then in 1969, Neil became an associate professor at the University of Arizona. In 1972, he became a professor at the same university, where he worked until his retirement as a professor emeritus in 2004.
Mendelson was a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Microbiology and Cosmos Club.
On July 30, 1959, Neil Mendelson married Joan F. Rintel. The marriage produced two children.
