(With its desperate acts and dire consequences, Nell Peter...)
With its desperate acts and dire consequences, Nell Peters's tale of a woman's life in northern Wisconsin is a remarkable story, full of the sense and sound and flavor of a time and place rarely visited in books. Nell's tomboy childhood, her businesslike initiation into sex on the eve of her departure for the WACs in 1951, her resulting pregnancy and return home to a life sharply at odds with small-town conventions, her struggle to keep her twin sons, and her disastrous sexual liaisons with men and women alike are recounted in this funny, gritty, and wildly candid book. (An abandoned baby, tragically killed and a series of murd...)
An abandoned baby, tragically killed and a series of murders committed by Santa - a happy Christmas isn't looking likely for DCI Rose Huntingford and her squad of detectives. While there appears to be no connection between the fit young men who have died, an identical message left after each crime suggests otherwise. Can the link be found in time to prevent further deaths? On a personal level, Rose feels the need to reclaim a proper life before it’s too late, dangerously unaware that it’s already much later than she thinks – a killer whom she put away the previous year has escaped from a secure mental institution and is intent on revenge. Only Rose’s head on a platter will do...

(Rose Huntingford is far from a DCI stereotype; she’s all ...)
Rose Huntingford is far from a DCI stereotype; she’s all the ‘F’s – fat, forties, frustrated and fantasising about a job where she’d never again have to look at a dead body or haul herself out of bed before dawn. She longs to vegetate between coffee and lunch breaks and get herself a proper life before it’s too late. But then people start dying - three victims in less than twenty-four hours. Rose and her team become entangled in a plot that involves sadistic murder, identical twins, a pseudo religious sect, the trading of human lives on a global scale and extreme danger for anyone who tries to stop the perpetrators. Unsure of whom she can trust and lacking without support from her senior officer, can Rose identify the pivotal motive behind the crimes before the body count increases and she is measured for an XL body bag?

("Twists abound as love blossoms amongst the dead bodies i...)
"Twists abound as love blossoms amongst the dead bodies in a genre-crossing novel with a dark undertow all its own." Marika Cobbold, best-selling author Emily Kelly cannot believe her luck when she is employed as companion to wealthy old Sir Gerald Ffinche. (OK, luck had nothing to do with it – but all’s fair in love and job-seeking, right?) She soon settles in chez Ffinche and builds an excellent rapport with Sir Gerald – but it’s his son Richard who really interests her, and they quickly become inseparable. However, it seems their happiness has enraged someone closely associated with the family, and a series of tragic events is set in motion. Subtle clues are left to incriminate Emily and when she determines to expose the real culprit, she is spoiled for choice. As the body count mounts, Emily and Richard – and the police – are perplexed. They’re clearly looking for someone who projects a mask of sanity to the world whilst being dangerously disturbed: but who? With a whole shoal of red herrings and a plot that veers from the almost cosy to a taut psychological thriller, By Any Other Name is an enthralling, chilling whodunit.
