She received a Bachelor of Arts in engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Master of Fine Arts in fiction from Columbia University. After the debut of her novel Song of the Water Saints, Rosario was described by Julia Alvarez as "a Caribbean Scheherazade.".
