Franklin attended high school at Campbell Hall Episcopal in Studio City, California. He graduated from The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University with friends Paige Howard and Renée Felice Smith.

Franklin"s first major role was recurred as Nick, the Indian Territory (U.S.) worker on National Broadcasting Company"s The Office. Franklin later went on to appear as a series regular on the short-lived FOX comedy series Traffic Light. He appears with another Office actor, David Denman, who played Pam"s ex-fiancee Royal
His side projects include a short for Funny or Die: a fake commercial promoting the Dudes-North-Bros Talking Points System, which is a service that helps guys who aren"t dudes or bros hold a conversation with dudes and brothers
He currently co-stars on the Columbia Broadcasting System sitcom The Millers and recurs on FOX sitcom New Girl and on the Home Box Office political comedy Veep.
