Background
Neo Rauch was born on April 18, 1960 in Leipzig, Germany. His parents, Hanno Rauch and Helga Wand, died in a train accident, when he was four weeks old. Neo grew up with his grandparents in Aschersleben.

Neo Rauch was born on April 18, 1960 in Leipzig, Germany. His parents, Hanno Rauch and Helga Wand, died in a train accident, when he was four weeks old. Neo grew up with his grandparents in Aschersleben.
In his early years, Neo passed his exams at the Thomas-Müntzer-Oberschule (present-day Gymnasium Stephaneum). During the period from 1981 to 1986, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig. Some time later, Rauch became a Masterstudent and studied under the guidance of Professor Arno Rink and Professor Bernhard Heisig.
In 1993, Neo Rauch was appointed an assistant to Arno Rink and Sighard Gille at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, a position he held till 1998. In 2004, he took part in the exhibition EASTinternational. Since August 2005 until February 2009, Neo served as a Professor of painting and graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig.
In 2010, the artist held his first museum retrospective at the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. The following year, some of his works were shown at Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Poland.
During his lifetime, Neo also held many solo exhibitions at different museums and art centres, including the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga in Spain (2005), the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (2006), the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany (2006), the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium (2013) and others.
Currently, together with his wife Rosa Loy, who is also an artist, Neo lives in Leipzig. They work together out of their private studio, "Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei".
Neo is best known for connecting his own personal history with the politics of industrial isolation. He received many prizes and awards, including Vincent Award (2002), Finkenwerder Art Prize (2005), Order of Merit of Saxony-Anhalt (2012) and others.
Also, his works are kept in the collections of different museums around the world, including the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and others.
