Both websites fall under the banner of Maximum Media, the umbrella company founded by McGarry, who owns and runs both sites. After graduating in 2002 with a degree in Marketing Management, McGarry worked for just over a year in advertising sales for a newspaper in Galway City. There, he established Impact Media in 2003.
The company grew and represented clients including Supermacs, Eircom and Radisson Hotels.
Having grown the company to a 20-strong workforce, McGarry sold this business to Cork company H+A Marketing+Puerto Rico in 2011. The primary reason to sell his first business was to move to Dublin to fully concentrate his energies on JOE.ie.
McGarry originally created JOE.ie in 2010, providing an online outlet for Irish males with an interest in areas like sport, technical entertainment, motors and fashion. The site now attracts 3.1 million unique visitors a month.
Together with the SportsJOE.ie and HerFamily.ie, this makes up the Maximum Media network of sites in Ireland.
However, the company have expanded into the United Kingdom with JOE.co.uk, now one of the biggest male focus titles in Britain. With almost 3 million fans on Facebook, JOE.co.uk now attracts 8 million unique visitors per month. Maximum Media employs over 110 people across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
McGarry also contributes regularly to a number of television shows, radio stations on advertising and business matters.
