Niccolo Amati was born on September 3, 1596, in Cremona, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

Career

Niccolo Amati was the most celebrated of the Amatis violin-maker. His label was “ Nicolaus Amati Cremonens. Hieronimi Filius Antonii nepos. Fecit anno 16—." In his workshop were trained both Andrea Guarneri and Antonio Stradivari.

Achievements

• He improved the model of violin in several respects, and, though generally working with a small pattern, built some so-called ‘‘ grand Amatis ”—large violins of more powerful tone, and in great request. The tone of his instruments is clearer, purer, and more sonorous than in those of his predecessors.
