( The extraordinary accomplishments of a great educator a...)
The extraordinary accomplishments of a great educator and even greater self-promoter To those who loved him, like Teddy Roosevelt, he was "Nicholas Miraculous," the fabled educator who could do everything; to those who didn't, like Upton Sinclair, he was "the intellectual leader of the American plutocracy," a champion of "false and cruel ideals." Ezra Pound branded him "one of the more loathsome figures" of the age. Celebrated and reviled around the world, Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University for forty-four years, was a dominant personality for half a century. In this engrossing biography, Michael Rosenthal explores the many ways in which this extraordinary character seized and wielded power. Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 while simultaneously president of Columbia University, of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Butler imposed himself on America as did few others. Rosenthal's superbly researched, elegantly written narrative brings vividly to life the mania, narcissism, and genius that enabled "Dr. Butler" to transform Columbia into New York's major research university and at the same time to become an internationally recognized institution himself. Rich in social, cultural, and political insight, Nicholas Miraculous illuminates Butler's prodigious career and the complex nature of the age that nourished him.

Nicholas Butler was born on 2 April in 1862 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, United States.
Nicholas Butler graduated from Columbia College, New York City, in 1882 and earned his doctorate there in 1884. After a year's study in Berlin and Paris, he returned to Columbia to become an assistant in philosophy.
His interest in the education of teachers led him to help organize, and to head from 1886 to 1891, the institution which later became Teachers College of Columbia University.
The transformation of Columbia into a modern university had already begun under his predecessors, but under Butler's leadership, the school experienced a tremendous increase in endowment, buildings, size of student body, and number and quality of faculty.
In 1901, Butler became president of Columbia; in 1904, of Barnard and the College of Pharmacy; in 1928, of Bard College; and in 1931 of New York Post-Graduate Medical School.
He retired from all Columbia University offices in 1945.
Butler's career embraced every phase of Columbia's transformation from a college having a classical curriculum to a modern university with its complex of programs.
Before 1900 Butler stressed the importance of flexibility and of the adjustment of man to new conditions.
Among Butler's many works is his autobiography, Across the Busy Years (2 vols. , 1939, 1940), Education in the United States (1910), The Faith of a Liberal (1924), and The World Today (1946).

(Format Paperback Subject Literary Collections)
(International Conciliation, No. 360, May, 1940.)
(Photograph Description: Dr. N.M. Butler Creator(s): Bain ...)
An active worker for the Republican party for most of his life, Butler attended national conventions from 1880 on, frequently as a voting delegate.
By 1920 Butler was in open conflict with many whom his earlier policies had brought to Columbia, notably John Dewey, Charles A. Beard, and Franz Boas. As a leader among conservative Republicans, Butler was most influential in 1912; his contribution to the defeat of the so-called "Progressive" wing, led by Theodore Roosevelt, brought him the Republican electoral vote for vice-president that year after the death of the regular nominee.
An indefatigable speechmaker, clubman, and fund raiser, Butler strove to expand and deepen the material and intellectual resources of his institution, building it into an international leader in advanced study and research.
In 1937 he was admitted as an honorary member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati.
Despite Butler's accomplishments, many people regarded him as arrogant.
Butler married Susanna Edwards Schuyler (1863–1903) in 1887 and had one daughter from that marriage. Susanna was the daughter of Jacob Rutsen Schuyler (1816–1887) and Susannah Haigh Edwards (born 1830).
His wife died in 1903 and he married again in 1907 to Kate La Montagne, granddaughter of New York property developer Thomas E. Davis.
