Nicholas Enright was born on December 22, 1950, in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. He was born in a Catholic, professional middle-class family.
Nick Enright attended Saint Ignatius College from 1962 to 1967. Later he became a student of Sydney University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. He also studied at New York University, School of the Arts, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in 1977.
Through the course of his career, Nick Enright worked as a playwright, drama teacher, and actor. At the State Theatre Company of South Australia, Adelaide, he worked as an Associate Director from 1978 to 1981. Then he was transferred to the post of a Teacher of Acting in 1978 and worked in the same position again from 1989 to 1992. He also was a Head of Acting here from 1982 to 1984. Later Enright worked as a Teacher at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and Australian Theatre for Young People. He also was a Host and Narrator of symphony and opera presentations for stage and television, and an actor in television films, including Breaking Up, 1985, and Brotherhood of the Rose, 1989.
The known playwright died of recurring skin cancer in 2003. Nick Enright worked on his plays until the last years of his life. He created more than forty plays, musicals, and adaptations.
