Nick Barton, Norwegian Rock mechanics and tunnelling engineer. Achievements include development of principal international method ofcharacterizing rock masses for designing tunnel and rock cavern support (Q-system, Barton, Lien and Lunde 1974); co-development of Barton-Bandis joint constitutive model for computer modelling of rock mass response to excavation, 1981; co-development of NMT Concept, Norwegian Method of Tunnelling, since 1992.
