He joined the Royal Engineers and attended Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
He went to North Kesteven Grammar School in North Hykeham, Lincolnshire. From 1972 he worked in the car retail industry, becoming Group Operations Director of Eastern Western Motor Group. His place in the Scottish Parliament was taken by Murdo Fraser.
He came out in favour of a Yes vote for Independence in December 2013.
He was a Conservative & Unionist Member of the Scottish Parliament for Mid Scotland and Fife from 1999 until his ill-health (stress-related pneumonia) induced resignation in August 2001.
