Career
He is best known for falling asleep in Parliament and accidentally voting with the opposing Labor party in 2014. Varvaris was born a twin child in a Greek migrant family of five children, in Sans Souci, New South Wales. He owned his own local business before entering politics.
He was also a councillor of the Kogarah City Council from 1999 and was the mayor from 2008.
Following the redistribution of NSW seats by the Australian Electoral Commission in October 2015, the proposed boundary changes turned Barton into a notionally Labor seat, former Labor Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has considered switching from the neighbouring seat of Grayndler to challenge Varvaris.
