Nickolay attended Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. In 1979, he defended his first dissertation and became a Candidate of Math. In 1987, Kuznetsov defended his second dissertation and received Doctor of Engineering Sciences degree.
In 1979, Nickolay started his career as a junior researcher at V. M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a post he held till 1984, when he was appointed a senior researcher. In 1989, Nickolay was promoted to the position of a leading researcher.
During his lifetime, he taught at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, as well as at other universities of Sweden, England and Germany.
