Nicolaas Sadie was born on January 31, 1913, son of a teacher, at Excelsior, 45 miles northeast of Bloemfontein.

Educated at his father’s school at Brandfort. After matriculating in 1931, he studied at Elsenburg Agricultural College.
He began farming at Winsburg, 70 miles north of Bloemfontein and in 1949 he was elected a Provincial Councillor for Winsburg. In 1954 he became chairman of the Provincial Council and two years later he was elected to the Executive Council of the Orange Free State.
Entering into Parliament in 1960 as MP for Winsburg, he became an active backbencher and a party office-bearer. He was on the Select Committee of Public Accounts and became secretary оf the Party’s Agricultural Section in Parliament. On moving to Witsicshoek Commissioner-General in 1970 he became a dedicated supervisor of the development of the Southern Sotho Pantustan.
Farmer who rose to be vice-chairman of the Nationalist Party caucus. Right¬winger with a paternalist attitude which makes him a good listener, but not a flexible politician prepared for compromise.
