(A gritty, terse glimpse at life through the indomitable l...)
A gritty, terse glimpse at life through the indomitable lens of a crime classic master. Portraying the oddities and kinks of human behaviour as well as the prejudices inherent in nations, Freeling casts a loving and sometimes scathing eye on humanity in this accomplished novel. Henri Castang is exposed as a raw, vulnerable man when faced with the cruel truth that he had a part, a share and even responsibility in the deaths of others throughout Europe.

(This was the end of the story that had started 'Once upon...)
This was the end of the story that had started 'Once upon a time, in a rainy country, there was a king...' The end had not happened in a rainy country, but on a bone-dry Spanish hillside, three hundred metres from where Van der Valk had left a lot of blood, some splintered bone, a few fragments of gut, and a ten-seventy-five Mauser rifle bullet. No one had broken any laws. But a handsome, middle-aged millionaire had disappeared with a naked girl. And Van der Valk was given the job of finding out why.

( Van der Valk is on the case again as a mysterious lette...)
Van der Valk is on the case again as a mysterious letter is unearthed alluding to the murder of a man named Cabestan. In the letter, the murderer is named but van der Valk must find out first who this mysterious letter-writer is. What transpires is a tale of deception and adultery as the rich Carl Merckel, the managing director of the Lutz Brothers merchant bank, lays an accusation of cold blooded homicide of which, he claims, his wife had no part to play. A true master of popular crime fiction and creator of the ever-popular Inspector van der Valk and Henri Castang, Nicolas Freeling has written more than thirty books and has an innate empathy with France and its culture. Born in London in 1927, Freeling has lived much of his life in Europe, notably the Vosges hills and Strasbourg. An astute, gritty writer of European flavour, his novels reflect all that is great about crime fiction.

In a French town, in a tiny hotel, a young widow vanishes. Castang is interested only because the last name in the register belongs to an old Polish-Jewish painter who has never set foot there. Who used his name and who leaves, in this name, a large sum of money in a Swiss bank?

(Hubertus van Bijl's family has a long and respected histo...)
Hubertus van Bijl's family has a long and respected history in the Dutch flower trade. Now retired, Bert busies himself with a bit of puttering around the house and long walks in the Zandvoort dunes near the coast of Holland. His wife, Willy, is loyal and dutiful-always saying "Bless You" when he sneezes-though Bert accepts that passion has left the marriage long ago. But ripples of unease soon appear in the quietude: The local authorities are conducting a door-to-door investigation into the murder of Carla Zomerlust, a young student whose body is found along a dune path. Through a diary-like narrative, the reader learns that Bert is not the docile botanist he-and everyone who knows him-considers himself to be. In a novel that plumbs the depths of madness, Nicolas Freeling creates his most compelling and disturbing work to date in this chilling examination of crime from the inside out.

Es ist nicht die Stadt des Himmlischen Friedens, aber auch kein Ort, in dem nur Düsterkeit herrscht. Freeling was born in London, but travelled widely, and ended his life at his long-standing home at Grandfontaine to the west of Strasbourg.
A television series based on the character was produced for the British Independent Television network by Thames Television during the 1970s, and revived in the 1990s. He had followed a variety of occupations, including the armed services and the catering profession. He began writing during a three-week prison sentence, after being convicted of taking home some veal from a restaurant where he worked, though this was common practice in the restaurant trade.
In 1968 his novel Love in Amsterdam was adapted as the film Amsterdam Affair directed by Gerry O"Hara and starring Wolfgang Kieling as Van Der Valk.
