Alter accepting some business representations in Lima, he became editor ol El Progreso Católico (1860-1861) and founded the newspaper El Tiempo in 1864. He served as minister of the treasury in President José Balta's cabinet. Therealter. he was in exile in Chile and France, until he became acting president of Peru from December 23, 1879, to November 28, 1881. While in Europe. Pierola and his followers founded the Democratic Party.
Pierola served as constitutional president from 1895 to 1899, and was in business from 1899 to 1909. The schism within the Democratic Party, caused by his withdrawal of support from the presidential candidacy of Guillermo Billinghurst, proved to be Pierola’s last historical act.
