(Lucienne Kundera, an astrophysicist, has uncovered a blac...)
Lucienne Kundera, an astrophysicist, has uncovered a black hole as mysterious as the secrets in her life. Lucienne's mother, Hlne, is a scientist as well, who was captured during World War II. She eventually escaped and disappeared, reappearing years later in New Mexico with Lucienne. He claims to have no recollection of these past events, but when she and Lucienne visit Paris, the city of Hlne's youth, Hlne is overcome by memories and secrets and attempts suicide. Lucienne becomes dangerously obsessed with uncovering her mother's past, while at the same time attempting to solve a celestial mystery so dark and dense that its nature cannot be revealed. Theater of the Stars is a finely crafted novel sure to establish Kelby as a storyteller of unique sensitivity and wisdom.

Take a slasher-movie actress, a Scottish circus clown, an FBI school dropout, a blind heiress, a junk-food-loving millionaire developer, and a Buddha-quoting bluesman, add a couple of murders in a normally sedate retirement community in South Florida, and you get an irresistible tale that's part Carl Hiaasen and part Gabriel García Márquez. It all goes down as easy as a Key lime pie martini, the signature drink of the Bad Girl's Bar & Grill. N. M. Kelby's last three novels have received glowing reviews in the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, People, and the Atlantic Monthly.

Nicole Kelby was born in the United States.
Nicole M. Kelby worked as a journalist, editor and educator before turning her hand to fiction. The sudden loss delivered a spiritual shock to Kelby, spurring her to leave her day job and devote herself full time to writing.
Kelby's first book, In the Company of Angels (2001), began as a 300-page graduate thesis and later became a 90-page story on the Zoetrope online writing workshop. Though small, the novella goes after the big questions: mortality, God, love, and salvation. Set in France and Belgium during World War II, the story follows a young Jewish girl who is rescued from her destroyed village by a pair of nuns. The girl's presence back in the nun's convent is accompanied by odd happenings: events and signs perhaps angelic, perhaps miraculous.
Kelby's second book, Theater of the Stars: A Novel of Physics and Memory (2003), is set amidst the mysteries of science rather than faith but mined similar themes of love and loss. The novel centers on astrophysicist Lucienne Kundera whose success in discovering a black hole is offset by a failing marriage and nagging questions about her mother - a physicist at Los Alamos during World War II - and the father she never knew.
In Whale Season: A Novel (2006), Kelby tells the story of a serial killer named Ricardo Garcia who thinks he is Jesus Christ. When used-car dealer Leon wins a poker game with Garcia, the spoils include a plush trailer. After the trailer is burnt down, the locals of the Florida town of Whale Harbor think that Leon perished in the fire, but he has actually survived and is being cared for in a nearby hospital. However, after a swarm of bees enters the hospital room and attacks him, the local staff dub Leon "Bee-Jesus." The marvel of the bees, who continue to swarm around Leon, attracts a bedazzled crowd hoping for a miracle based on delusional comments Leon has made. Meanwhile, Garcia continues his murderous rampage through local clubs and strip bars.
Her other works include Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar and Grill (2008), A Travel Guide for Reckless Hearts: Stories (2009), White Truffles in Winter (2011), The Pink Suit (2014).
