Colonel, World War I. During the Civil War, in the Ukrainian detachments which joined Petliura, 1919, and the Red Army, 1920. Soviet military specialist during the Polish campaign, 1920. Participated in the suppression of the Antonov uprising in Tambov, 1921.
Fought against anti-communist partisans (basmachi) in Central Asia, 1922. Thereafter, lecturer at the Military Academy. One of the main authors of a 2 vol. history of the Civil War, 1928-1930.
