Morozov, Nikolai was born on July 7, 1854 in the village of Borok near Iaroslavl’. Son of a land-owner and peasant woman.

Involved in revolutionary activity from the middle 1870s. Member of N. Chaikovskii’s circle, later of Narodnaia Volia. Edited the revolutionary newspaper Rabotnik in Geneva, and Zemlia 1 Volia in Russia.
Went abroad in 1880 and met Karl Marx. Returned in January 1881, arrested at the border, sentenced to life imprisonment. Remained in solitary confinement in Schlusselburg prison until 1905 (almost a quarter of a century).
During this time, actively studied many subjects and became famous for his many books (on chemistry, physics, astronomy, history, religion, also poems). During World War I, lectured at the front. From 1918 until his death, director of the Leshaft Institute of Natural Sciences.
Popular with the peasants of his village for preserving the traditional way of life, as established by his father, in contrast to the new neighbouring kolkhozes.
