Skoblin, Nikolai was born on June 9, 1893 in Nezhin in the Ukraine. Son of a colonel.
Educated at the Chuguev Military School, 1914.
Took part in World War I, decorated for bravery. During the Civil War, divisional commander in the Denikin army, later one of the best-known commanders with General Wrangel in the Crimea. Evacuated to Gallipoli after the defeat of the Whites.
Married there the famous folk-singer N. Plevitskaia, 11 years his senior, and fell completely under her spell. Accompanied his wife on her triumphant tours all over the world in the 1920s. At the same time, tried to regain some of the glamour he had previously known as a commander of the crack division of the Whites, by intrigues in ex-officers’ organizations, and by shady affairs with the secret services of various countries.
According to some information, he was involved with the German secret service in the preparation of the fake Zinov’ev letter which led to the British Labour Party’s defeat in the 1924 general election. Also, again with the German secret service, involved in arousing Stalin’s suspicions against Marshal Tukhachevskii and his alleged connections with Germany, which led to the virtual liquidation of the leadership of the Red Army on Stalin’s orders on the eve of World War II. More certain are facts pointing not to Germany, but to the Soviet Union. At some point during these years, he must have found out that his wife had become a Soviet agent, and agreed to cooperate while pretending to remain a loyal friend to his former cofighters in the Civil War.
Cooperated in the kidnapping of his former commander and personal friend General Kutepov in Paris, 1930. Managed to remain above suspicion and continued to associate with other former White officers. Repeated his service to the NKVD by luring Kutepov’s successor, General Miller, to kidnapping and probably death, but this time was found out.
Fled in 1937 after this incident (Plevitskaia was arrested and died in a French prison). Probably killed by his NKVD controllers.
