Met K. Korovin, 1897, and the circle of Young Muscovite Painters (P. Kuznetsov, P. Utkin, and A. Sredin). Travelled throughout Russia, including the Caucasus and Samarkand. Promoted by Korovin. Visited Paris, 1899.
Exhibited his paintings at the World of Art and the Union of Russian Painters. Appointed to the studios of I. P. Laurens and L. O. Merson. Married in 1905 and had 4 children.
From 1900, worked incessantly, painting many different subjects such as markets, street scenes, working people, and crowds. A major exhibition of his work took place in 1981 at the Petit Palais.
