In 1978, Nikolai was graduated from Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine named after K.I. Scriabin in specialty “Biochemist”.
In 1971-73, he was the Laboratory Assistant at the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. Since 1978, he has been Senior Laboratory Assistant, Junior Research Fellow, Senior Laboratory Research Fellow; Senior Research Fellow of the Department Research Fellow of "Biochemistry" sector of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute for Veterinary Virology and Microbiology of the Ministry of Agriculture of USSR (Pokrov, the Moscow region).
Since 2000, he was Head of the Immunochemistry Department of the Municipal Scientific Center on Human and Animal Diseases Diagnostics and Prevention. Since 2001, he has been the Head of Laboratory of the Scientific Research Virology Institute named after D.I. Ivanovsky of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Moscow).
Since 2003, he has been Deputy Director for research of All-Russian State Center for Safety and Standardization of Human and Animal Drug Preparations and Feeds of the Veterinary Department of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture. Since 2005, he has been Deputy Head of the Administration, since 2006, he has been Head of the Administration for Veterinary Surveillance of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor). On 2 April 2008, he was appointed Deputy Head of Rosselkhoznadzor.
