Began as a writer for children. Later gained a reputation for his modernist poetry (influenced by Khlebnikov): Stolbtsy, 1929, and Torzhestvo Zemledeliia, 1933. Combined a pantheistic approach to nature with primitivist stylistic experiments.
Arrested, 1938, sent to the Gulag in Siberia, and later to exile in Kazakhstan. His long poem Rubruk v Mongolii was published posthumously, 1960. Translated the masterpiece of Georgian literature by S. Rustaveli, Vitiaz v Tigrovoi Shkure.
