One of the foremost authorities in the world on aerohydrodynamics. Before World War I, worked on the theoretical problems of aeronautics, ballistics and hydromechanics. Organized the Aerohydrodynamic Institute, 1918, and in the early 1920s, the Aviation Engineering Academy.
His work formed the basis of Soviet aviation design and industry.
