In 1835 Nikolai Alexandrovich graduated from Law Faculty of Saint Petersburg State University.
Since 1835 Nikolai Alexandrovich worked in a Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1839-1841 worked in the diplomatic mission in Naples, 1842-1843 – Asian diplomatic mission.
In 1863, Nikolai Alexandrovich, along with other representatives of the noble opposition, founded the newspaper "Vest". He was elected a member of the Free Economic Society.
Nikolai Alexandrovich is the author of brochures: "A Look at Rural Management" (1853), "On the improvement of legalizations relating to the patrimonial rights of the nobility” (Berlin, 1858), "Two notes on the patrimonial issue" (Berlin) and other.
For 12 years (1849-1863) Nikolai Alexandrovich was the leader of the nobility of Petersburg district. He died suddenly in Tsarskoye Selo, in the rank of chamberlain. Buried in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
Nikolai Alexandrovich opposed the emancipation of the peasants, defending the inviolability of the noble privileges, relying on the Ыtatute of the Nobility in 1785, and became one of the prominent representatives of the opposition. He was sure that with the liberation of the peasants, a major revolution would come that would shock the entire state organism.
