Nikolai Filippovich Petrov was born on February 28, 1872 in Beketovo Village, Nizhnedevitsky County, Voronezh, Russian Federation.
Nikolai Filippovich Petrov graduated from the Voronezh non-classical secondary school (1892), at the same time he attended home studio of the artist L.G. Solovyov. He studied at St. Petersburg Art Academy (1892-1901) under I.Ye. Repin.
In 1910-1936 was a lecturer at the Penza Art School, since 1936 - lecturer at the All-Russian Art Academy (Leningrad; now Saint Petersburg). Solo exhibitions of works by Petrov were held in Leningrad, Voronezh and Penza. He was awarded the gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in 1908, in Munich, Germany for his painting "Hall in Raksha". In 1916, Petrov received the title of Academician of Painting.
