Nikolai Grigorievich Petrov was born on February 28, 1932 in New Chigla village, Talovsky district, Central Black Earth Region (nowadays Russian Federation).
In 1950 Nikolai Grigorievich Petrov finished Khrenovsky Forest Technical School. He also graduated from the Voronezh State Academy of Forestry Engineering (1959).
In 1953-1974 Nikolai Grigorievich Petrov worked as a technical supervisor, head of the department of agroforestry and gardening of the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Central Black Earth Zone named after V.V. Dokuchaeva in Talovsky district.
In 1974-1979 he was a Deputy Head, Head of Department for Science and Agriculture of the Main Directorate for Science and Propaganda of the RSFSR Ministry of Agriculture. In 1979-1984 - Academic Secretary, Divisional Manager of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences named after V.I. Lenin.
In 1984-1986 was a Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Science of the USSR Ministry of Agriculture. In 1986-1989 was a Head of the Subdivision of the Introduction and Propaganda Department of Science and Best Practices of the USSR State Agricultural Committee. In 1989 was a Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Promotion and Organization of Development achievements of science and technology of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences named after V.I. Lenin. Since 1990, Deputy Academic Secretary of the Department of Forestry and Agroforestry of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
In 1984 he became a Doctor of Agricultural Science. In 1997 he received a status of a Member of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
