After completing the course at the Ukrainian Gymnasium (1812), Nikolai Ivanovich attended Kharkiv University (now V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University).
He served as a clerk in the Sloboda-Ukrainian Governor's Board. In 1823, he entered the Chapter of orders, under the Chancellor A. L. Naryshkin, and stayed abroad from the spring of 1823 to the autumn of 1825. Since that time, he has published articles in the Parisian magazine "Mercure du XIX siečle". In 1821, he first appeared in print as a like-minded catenin in the article "o zametchaniyah gospodina Z na komedii “shkola zhenschin" and “spletni"" (1821).
