In 1869 Nikolai Petrovich graduated from the 3rd Alexander Military School in Moscow and, in 1882, from the Nicholas General Staff Academy.
From 1892 to 1904 Nikolai Petrovich Mihnevich was the professor of the Department of Russian Military History. After that during 3 years he was the Head of the Nicholas General Staff Academy. Then he was the Commander of the 24th Infantry (1907-1908), 2nd Guards (1908-1910) Division, the Fifth Army Corps (1910-1911), which headquarters was in Voronezh (simultaneously the head of the Voronezh garrison). In 1910 he became General of Infantry and from 1911 to 1917 he was the Chief of General Staff of the Russian army.
Since 1911, the Chairperson of the Voronezh Committee on the collection, study and publication of data about the Patriotic War of 1812. From 1919 to 1925 was a Professor of the Artillery Academy of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army.
