In 1827, Nikolai Stepanovich graduated from the Artillery School of Mikhailovsk.
In 1849-1858, Nikolai Stepanovich served as a Commanding General of the 1st Artillery Brigade of Guards. In 1856, he was temporarily appointed as a commander of the Western Army. Since 1858, he was the General of the Head Artillery Office for special assignments. In 1860-1863, Nikolai Stepanovich was the General Officer of the 4th Artillery Division. In 1849, he was awarded the 6th class Order of St. George. In 1864, he was ranked among the noble class of the Voronezh governorate.
