From 1897 member, League for the Liberation of the Working Class. 1898 arrested and exiled to Vyatka Province, whence he soon fled. 1898-1905 lived in England and for some time worked on ed staff of newspaper Iskra, which was founded by Lenin.
Participated in the 1905 Revol in Saint St. Petersburg. 1917 February Revol found him in Irkutsk. Active in 1917 October Revol, headed Executive Committee, Irkutsk Soviet of Soldiers’ Deputy.
From 1921 in Moscow, worked for the Main Polit Education Board, the Communist International ajid for the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) Central Committee. Then with the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics People's Commissariat, later Minister of Foreign Trade. Simultaneously teaching and sci work.
Delegation at 3rd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress and 22nd Communist Party of the Soviet Union Congress. Author of memoirs about Lenin.
