ARBATOV, Nikolay was born in 1869.
Graduate Law Faculty, Moscow University, and Fedotov Drama School.
Began amateur acting at age 15. Actor and stage director under Stanislavsky at Art and Literature Council, which he took over when Stanislavsky went to Moscow Arts Theater. 1903 embarked on full-time theatrical career.
Worked at Komissarzhevskaya Theater, Saint St. Petersburg, where he produced Gorky's Deti solntsa (Children of the Sun), et cetera 1908-1915 chief stage director, Suvorin Theater (theater of Saint St. Petersburg Literature and /Art Social), where he staged Russian classics and plays by Ibsen, Hauptmann, et cetera After 1917 October Revol chief stage director, Theater of State People's Center, Pctrograd.
1918 invited by Lunacharskiy to work on Arts Board, Committee for Photography and Cinema. Helped organize first Russian school of cinematography and later an Institute and college of cinematographic art 1921-1922 chief stage director, Alexandrine Theater.
1923-1924 again chief stage director, Theater of State People's Center. Also taught acting; his productions were notable for perfect reproduction of the style and atmosphere of the age in which they were sel-J.
