1899-1901 studied at Law Faculty, Tomsk University. 1914 graduate Moscow' Business Institute.
1901 expelled from Tomsk University for taking part in students’ political strike. From 1902 helped lead Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party organizations in Siberia. Several times arrested: in 1920's worked for Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Supreme Economic Council and People's Commissariat of Workers and Peasants’ Inspection.
Simultaneously professor of economics geography at Moscow higher educational establishements. From 1925 deputy rector, then rector, Communist University for Workers of the East. From 1929 professor and from 1932 director, Geography Research Institute, Moscow University and head, Chair of Economy Geography, Institute of Red Professor.
During World War 2 director Geography Section, Kaz Branch, LISSR Academy of Sciences and professor, Alma-Ata Teachers’ Training Institute. Chief ed, journal Voprosy geografii worked on economics geography of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and other countries.
Author ol geography textbooks, including Ekonomicheskaya gcografiya USSR (Economic Geography of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics) (1926-1955) for use in secondary schools and which has run to 16 cd.
