Nikolay BARANSKY, USSR Geographer. Professor; Doctor of Geography Science; corresponding member, USSR Academy of Science, since 1939; Professor, Moscow University, since 1929; Chief Editor, journal “Voprosy geografii” (Problems of Geography); Honoured Worker of Science Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, since 1943. several Order of Lenin; several Order of Red Banner of Labor; Badge of Honor; medals; Stalin Prize, 1952.


BARANSKY, Nikolay was born in 1881 in Tomsk.


1899-1901 Law Faculty, Tomsk University. 1914 graduated Moscow Institute of Commerce.


Since 1898 propagandist and organizer of Society Democratic movement in Russia. 1901 expelled from university for taking part in student political strike. From then on professional revolutionary in Siberia.

1903 elected comt. member, Siberian Society Democratic Union. 1905 attended 1st All-Russia Bolsheviks’ Conference in Tammerfors, Finland. Since 1918 high posts in Soviet government and institutes.

1920 Director, Economics Department, Siberian Revolutionary Committee, and Deputy Director, Siberian Statistical Board. Member, All-Union Geography Society. Member, Higher Certifying Commission, Minister of Higher Education.

1921-1941 member, Collegium, Popular Commissariat of Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspection. Directed propaganda group for “Lenin Recruitment” work, Central Committee, All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). Deputy Rector, then Rector, Communist University for Workers of the East.

1941-1943 Director, Geography Section, Kazakhstan Branch, USSR Academy of Science. Professor, Alma-Ata Pedagogical Institute.
