DEM’YANOV, Nikolay was born on March 27, 1861 in Tver’ (now Kalinin).
1886 graduate Moscow University.
1887-1894 associate, from 1894 professor, Petrine Forestry and Agric Academy, Moscow (now Timiryazev Agric Academy). 1907-1917 simultaneously lecturer in chemistry, Golitsyno Higher Women's Courses. 1920 co-founder. Workers’ Faculty, Moscow Agric Academy.
From 1935 laboratory head, Institute of Organic Chemistry, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1895 defended master’s thesis on "The Reaction of Nitrous Acid with TriTetraand Pentamethylenediamincs”, in which he described a general method of obtaining normal saturated glycols, unsaturated alcohols and their isomeric oxides in the y and 5 series. Obtained and studied tetraand pentamethylene glycols and their oxides.
1899 defended doctor’s thesis on "The Reaction of Nitric Anhydride and Hyponitrous Oxide with Ethylene Hydrocarbons”, in which he demonstrated that the reaction of N2O5 with unsaturated hydrocarbons produces nitric ethers of glycol and the derivatives N2O3, N2O4 and N2O5. Did research on the products obtained by reduction of these compounds and established that this reaction may be used to obtain diamines and oxyamines. 1934 summarized his findings in an article entitled 'The Reaction of Nitrous Oxides N2O5, N2O4 and N2O3) with Unsaturated Hydrocarbons".
These findings provided the basis for the development of a new trend in organic chemistry. Further developed the work of Gustavson and Markonovnikov on cyclic polymethylene hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Studied the isomeric conversion of the simplest carbocyclic compounds.
Proved that the reaction of zinc dust and alcohol with dibromo-dcrivated saturated hydrocarbons (Gustavson’s reaction) in which the two bromine atoms are separated by no more than one CH2 group produces a trimethylene cycle. Was thus able to obtain the first homologue of trimethylene - methyl cyclopropane. 1901 began research which led to discovery of the laws governing the isomerization of carbocyclic systems (Democratic’yanov regrouping).
Was first to synthesize such compounds as vinyl trimethylene, methylene cyclobutane, cyclopropane, et cetera Also did research on agrochemistry and plant chemistry. Coauthored textbook on plant chemistry and wrote textbook on organic chemistry.

Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
Member,Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1929.
