1889 graduate Law Faculty, Moscow University.
1891 first work published. Leading theater critic of newspaper Russkiye vedomosti. Regular contributor to many other pre-revol periodicals (Teatral, Novosti dnya) from 1898 reviewed Moscow theater productions for Yezhegodnik imperatorskikh teatrov (Annual of Imperial Theaters) publicized work of Moscow Arts Theater and Chekhov's plays.
His reviews, articles and books on Arts Theater showed his profound understanding of balancing tradition and innovation. Wrote monographs on Yermolova, Shchepkin, Yuzhin, et cetera Company-ed, first volume of istoriya russkogo teatra (History of Russian Theater).
1921-1922 ed, journals Kul'tura teatra and Teatral’noye obozreniye. Worked for Theater History Section, Theater Department, People's Commissariat of Education. Chairman. Theater Section, Russian Academy of Arts.
