Background
Nikolay Gay was born in 1831. Nikolay grandfather emigrated from France to Russia in the end of XVIII century. His father, Nikolay Osipovich Gay (Ge), was a dismissed russian officer. He married a daughter of Polish man who was exiled to Voronezh, Elena Sadovska. In Voronezh, Nikolay Osipovich served at Commisariat Commission. Nikolay's mother died of cholera 3 months after giving birth to Nikolay, so he was fostered by a serf nanny. The family moved to Kiev in 1841.
Career
In his works, Gay has utilized historical and evangelical themes quite often. For example: "Heralds of Resurrection" (1867), " In Gethesemane garden" (1869), "Peter the Great interrogates his son Aleksey Petrovich, Tsarevich of Russia in Peterhof" (1871), "The trial of Sanhedrin. Death is due!" (1892).
Moreover, he has painted the portraits of Aleksandr Ivanovich Herzen (1867), Nikolay Ivanovich Kostomarov (1870), Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1871), Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1884) and numerous other people.
In 1863, for his painting of "Last Supper" Nikolay was granted the title of a Professor.
