1900-1909 studied at Moscow Synodal College, from which he graduated as a choirmaster. 1909-1914 studied composition under M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov and South.N. Vasilenko at Moscow Conservatory.

Conducted Synodal Choir and Choir of Russian Choral Social. From 1915 choirmaster, 1918-1928 and 1930-1936 conductor, Bolshoy Theater. 1919 cofounder, Bolshoy Theater Opera Studio (later Stanislavsky Opera Theater).
1922-1923 made concert tour of Western Europe as accompanist to his wife Authorised Version Nczhdanova. 1925-1929 professor of opera and orchestration, Moscow Conservatory: 1926-1928 opposed attempts to change the repertoire of the Bolshoy Theater to encompass themes on "socialist construction” but finally yielded to criticism and contributed to the development of Soviet music, becoming one of the country’s foremost conductors. From 1937 chief conductor, Bolshoy Symphony Orchestra, All-Union Radio Committee.
From 1948 chief conductor, Bolshoy Theater. Displayed particular brilliance in his treatment of works with a marked national epic character, notably those of Borodin, RimskyKorsakov and Moussorgsky.
