Also head, Biochemistry Laboratory (Department), All-Union Institute of Phytoculture. From 1929 professor, Chair of Microbiology, Leningrad University. 1936-1948 co-founder and ed, multi- volume work Biokhimiya kul’turriykh rasteniy (Crop Biochemistry).
Compiled large body of information on various plants, especially on protein content. Devised original biochemical plant selection methods which led to the cultivation of new crops (alkaloid-free lupin and sweet clover with a low coumarin content). Also did research on the biochcmisty of microorganisms, notably on the ureal metabolism of fungi and bacteria.
Also sought new vegetable sources of vitamins.
