From December 1918 volunteer, Galician Army, West Ukraine People's Republic, which fought simultaneously against Poland and the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. From early 1920 in Red Army. 1920 div chief of staff, then commander, 10th Rifle Division.
Commander, 3rd Army; deputy to commander (Tukhachcvsky), Western Front. 1921 chief of staff, army group assigned to put down Antonov rebellion. 1922 troop commander, Bukhara-Fergana district, where he fought against the Basmachi, 1921-1922 senior tactics instructor, Red Army Military Academy.
From 1923 head, Department (then Section) for the History of the Civil War, Red Army Staff. Wrote numerous books and articles on the history of the Civil War and over 300 works on operations, tactics and strategy. In his works on the war against Poland he expressed the opinion that the Soviet setbacks at Warsaw in 1920 were the result of commander Tukhachcvskiy’s miscalculations and the failure of the command on the Southwestern Front (A. I. Yegorov and Stalin) to transfer three armies to the Western Front.
June 1930 arrested by Joint State Political Administration. 19 February 1932 sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
