1921 graduate Leningrad Military Medical Academy. 1922 graduate Natural Sciences Department, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Leningrad University.
1921-1936 lecturer, 1936-1955 head, Chair of Histology and Embryology, Military Medical Academy, where he specialized in histology under Professor A. A. Maksimov. 1928-1938 founder-head Cytology Laboratory, Leningrad Oncological Institute, 1932 founded Chair of Histology, 1.
1. Mechnikov Training Hospital. 1932-1941 founderhead, Laboratory of Experimental Histology and Tissue Cultures, 1945-1954 founder-head Histology Department, Institute of Experimental Medical
1955-1961 head Laboratory of Experimental Morphology, Oncological Institute, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Medical Sciences. Pioneered study of evolutionary histology in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Made extensive use of tissue culture method to study specifically histological problems of tissue differentiation, determination and classification.
Established that intra vitam stains accumulate in granules formed under the influence of the staining media. Did research on the epithelial and muscular tissues, neuroglia and vasal endothelium. Performed experimental histological analyses of tumor tissues on the basis of which he hypothesized the specificity of the properties of vertebrate tissues.
Devised classification of tissues in vertebrates. Postulated theory of divergent tissue evolution which parallels Darwin’s theory of the divergent evolution of whole organisms.
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Medical Sciences from 1945.
