KOCHIN, Nikolay was born on May 19, 1901.
1923 graduate Pctrograd University.
1919 drafted into Red Army while still a student. Fought against Yudcnich and Kronstadt rebels. 1924-1934 taught at Leningrad University.
1923 demonstrated that a compressible liquid can be moved by conservative forces and form vortices without an external energy source. 1924 solved equations for the movement of compressible liquids on the rotating Earth. 1924-1925 did research on shockwaves from explosions in compressible liquids.
1931 determined the conditions of the formation of a cyclone wave from air masses at the interface. 1933-1934 director, Institute of Theoretical Meteorology. 1935 devised method of determining the pole of the velocities and pressures of air masses attracted by the rotating Earth, taking into account viscosity and non-uniform atmospheric temperature.
1936 on the basis of this method developed model of zonal atmospheric circulation. 1937 devised general method of solving plane problem of a submerged hydrofoil and formula for the resistance of a ship’s body. 1938-1944 taught at Moscow University.
1939-1944 also head, Mech Department, Institute of Mech, USSR Academy of Sciences. 1941-1944 provided first strict solutions for a wing of finite span. Also did research on pure mathematics and theoretical mech.
Wrote numerous works, including textbooks on hydromech and vector calculus. Co-authored a monograph on dynamic meteorology and edited the posthumous memoirs of A. M. Lyapunov and 1. A. Lappo-Danilevskiy.
