1932-1933 studied with "special group” (promising but poorly educated military commanders) at Frunze Military Academy.
Fought in World War 1. October 1917 joined Red Guards with a detachment which he had founded. From 1918 in Red Army.
During Civil War commander, cavalry regt, Kotovskiy Cavalry Brigade. 1921-1925 commander, cavalry brigade, then division 1925-1937 commander, 2nd Cavalry Corps.
1937 deputy commander of cavalry, Kiev, then Belorussian Military district. Member, Ukraine Central Executive Committee. 1937 arrested by People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs.
