1878 graduate Medical Faculty, Dorpat University.
1880 defended doctor’s thesis on the role of inorganic salts in animal fodder. From 1882 worked as pediatrician in Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad). Provided first experimental proof that more than protein, fat, sugar, salts and water is needed to maintain life and demonstrated that, apart from casein, fat, lactose and salts, milk contains other vital substances (named “vitamins” by K. Funk in 1912).
Wrote over 40 works on pediatrics and dietetics.
