In 1974, Malyshev graduated from Syzran Air Force Academy. He also completed academic training courses for Air Force political staff (1985).
In 1968, Malyshev started his army service in the Soviet Army. He participated in military operation on the Afghanistan territory during 1979-1989. Malyshev was a deputy commander of helicopter squadron for political affairs (40th Army, limited contingent of the Soviet troops in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan). The last years of his life Malyshev lived and worked in Voronezh. There he was a head of the rehabilitation center called "Revival" for the disabled and veterans of war actions.
On January 13, 1987, Nikolay Malyshev was granted the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
During his career, Malyshev took around 780 operational flights.
The pilot distinguished himself in defensive actions of convoy in cooperation with land forces, in particular he prevented the annihilation of a motorized riffle company, which had been ambushed.
