1869-1874 studied at Moscow Classical High School.
1874 joined Moscow Populist circle. Engaged in Populist “to the people” work in Yaroslavl’, Kursk, Voronezh and Kostroma Provinces. Late 1874 went to Geneva and contributed to newspaper “Rabotnik” and “Vperyod”.
Joined 1st International. Spring 1875 returned to Russia, was arrested and 1877-1878 tried. 1878 joined “Land and Liberty” group.
Company-ed, newspaper “Zemlya i volya. After schism in this organisation, became member, Executive Committee, People's Will organisation. Helped edit newspaper “Narodnaya volya”.
1880 went abroad and met Marx in London. January 1881 arrested trying to cross Russian border illegally. Sentenced to an indefinite term at hard labor.
Until October 1905 imprisoned at Shlissel’burg Fortress, where he spent the time studying chemistry, physics, astronomy, mathematics and history. After his release from the Fortress, published a number of sci works written during his imprisonment. Taught chemistry and astronomy at Lesgaft Higher Courses and at Psychoneurological Institute.
1911 sentenced to a year’s imprisonment (served in Dvinsk Fortress) for antireligious trends in his collected verse “Zvezdnyyc pesni" (Star Songs), published in 1910. 1917 sided for a while with the Constitutional-Democratic Party and took part in the Moscow State Consultative' Organisation 1918 appointed director, Lesgaft Biological Laboratory, which was soon developed into the Lesgaft Research Institute.
Wrote a number of books on the history of religion and Christianity: Otkroveniye v groze i bure (Revelation in Storm and Tempest) (1907). Proroki (The Prophets) (1914) and Khristos (Christ) (7 volume, 1924-1932), which revised many general historical dogmas and views connected with history of Christianity. His theses were rejected by Soviet historians.
Honorary member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sei from 1932.
